I nevi (più comunemente chiamati nei) sono, del resto, lesioni pigmentate una presenza normale in tutte le persone, e si possono trovare in ogni area della pelle del corpo. Nella maggior parte dei casi , sono innocui. Tuttavia, alcuni di essi presentano un rischio più o meno elevato di sviluppare un tumore della pelle. I nei che destano preoccupazione possono essere rimossi dopo una attenta analisi e valutazione caso per caso.
La rimozione del neo potrebbe essere necessaria quando vi sono segni di un possibile sviluppo di una neoplasia, ma anche se si trovano in punto in cui sono sottoposti a un continuo sfregamento.
I cambiamenti nell’aspetto dei nevi possono essere indicatori di un eventuale sviluppo “maligno”. Il cambiamento può essere nel colore, nella dimensione, nella forma o nella trama. In generale, qualsiasi cambiamento si noti è potenzialmente sospetto e dovrebbe essere controllato.
Tra i possibili segnali di una crescita cancerosa che potrebbero richiedere la rimozione troviamo:
- asimmetria del neo;
- bordi mal definiti, frastagliati o irregolari;
- colore disomogeneo;
- dimensioni pari o superiori a 6 mm;
- nuove formazioni;
- aspetto cambiato rispetto al passato.
